Everything about Cropduster Song totally explained" Cropduster" is a song by the rock group Pearl Jam off of the band's 2002 album, Riot Act. It is the fourth track on the album.
Origin and recording
The song features music written by drummer Matt Cameron and lyrics written by lead singer Eddie Vedder. Guitarist Stone Gossard on the song:
Matt Cameron wrote the music and then Ed wrote the words to it, which I think are some of the most beautiful words on the record. It's a very cool song. It is a little bit more straightforward than [Cameron'scontribution to Binaural] "Evacuation".
Lyrical meaning
Eddie Vedder about "Cropduster":
I think "Cropduster" at some point has some stuff about the life cycle, which, whether we want to or not, everyone's participating in. Where does it go from there? It's actually been a couple weeks since I listened to it: "Seed to seedling, root to stem... the world thought me." I think it's all about man's giant ego, that he's the most important thing on the planet. I don't know how it got so imbalanced. At this point, we've got the power to destroy human life, and we're kind of cavalier about it, and it's gotten to the point where we've trivialized it into "Showdown Against Iraq" or "Showdown In Iraq," as if it's the O.K. Corral and George W.'s got the below-the-waist belt buckled on, and he's gonna quick-draw somebody. I'm angry that George Bush got to be in the White House, and I'm angry that Gore wasn't able to be a better candidate after eight years of a great economy and being an incumbent. And I'm angry that before that, all the talk was about a blue dress, and we can't even open up the information and let people understand Dick Cheney's involvement with Halliburton and his involvement with oil in Iraq, and oil deals directly with Saddam Hussein through front companies that had to do with Halliburton. I'm frustrated with the amount of information that doesn't seem to be able to surface.
Live performances
The song was premiered live at the band's December 5, 2002 concert in Seattle, Washington. Performances of "Cropduster" can be found on the DVDs Live at the Showbox and Live at the Garden.
